Solvents in the Workplace

Solvents are used as an integral part of day to day operations across many industries: industrial cleaning and maintenance, dry cleaning, paint thinning and coating, automotive and aerospace manufacturing, printing, etc. Many solvents are considered hazardous and need to be disposed of properly according to the EPA's Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) which outlines hazardous waste regulations. Recently the EPA published guidance for businesses regarding how the RCRA regulations apply to solvents. This guide is designed to provide information on what solvents are, who uses them, how to determine if they are hazardous and how they can be disposed of.
