Water splashing on the pier from the ocean during hurricane

Since 1965, hurricane season has lasted from June 1st to November 30th. Last year’s first tropical storm, Arthur, started the record-breaking season on May 16th, making it the sixth consecutive year to see named systems forming before the official start of the season.

According to Dennis Feltgen, a meteorologist with the National Hurricane center (NHC), storms that form in May are short-lived, but thanks to better technology they’re now easier to identify and monitor. In prior years, the NHC has issued special reports when a system could potentially form before June 1. Last year 36 such reports were issued. To better prepare communities, this year the daily Atlantic Tropical Weather Outlooks and Graphical Tropical Weather Outlooks will start to be issued on May 15. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and a team of Meteorologists from the NHC considered extending the hurricane season by moving the official start date to May 15 but ultimately decided against it, for now.
