US Ecology is dedicated to the growth and safety of our neighboring communities. Each year we provide several services to various communities across the state of Michigan. These services include management of hazardous waste for lab pack, emergency response, mercury collection, and the transformation of waste to energy. These efforts help to support and sustain Michigan’s economy as well as to protect the environmental health and safety of our communities.
US Ecology offers collection events for household hazardous waste (HHW) across 16 different cities and counties. These events provide a safe and responsible alternative for residents to dispose of their HHW. In addition, these services are also offered to local businesses that wish to extend these benefits to their employees and communities in which they reside.
US Ecology also offers a program known as the HHW Resource Recovery Center Management Program. The company currently provides this program to five Michigan counties who wish to run their own HHW program. These counties contracted our Industrial Services team to provide staff training to county personnel, along with weekly and monthly transportation and disposal services for all HHW collected at these events.
US Ecology supports the hazardous waste needs of local colleges, high schools, and universities by offering a wide range of Lab Pack services. These services provide a way for schools to dispose of spent chemicals that could be hazardous to the environment and local community. They consist of lab packing, reactive/radioactive waste management, unknown identification and sampling. Currently the company service 18 schools, including Michigan State University, University of Michigan, Ferris State University, Schoolcraft Community College, Lawrence Technological University, Henry Ford Community College, Kettering University, Central Michigan University, and many others.
In its ongoing effort to protect the environment, US Ecology recently partnered with the State of Michigan to help manage the Michigan Mercury Collection Program. The program, which began in April 2013 and ran into 2015, collected over 2,100 mercury containing devices (i.e.: thermostats, thermometers, barometers, relays and switches, medical devices, etc.), with over 50 buckets containing dental and elemental mercury, from approximately 225 Michigan businesses and roughly 145 Michigan residents.
US Ecology has also been contracted by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to perform emergency cleanup services of hazardous materials in various counties across Michigan. A recent cleanup project located in Texas Township (Kalamazoo County) involving the characterization, identification, and packaging of thousands of chemicals found illegally stored in local barns. US Ecology was the prime contractor for the project and completed the job according to all EPA and state regulations, thus preventing any harmful chemicals from leaking into neighboring communities and causing harm to residents.
US Ecology is always looking for new and innovative ways to support its local communities. This dedication doesn’t stop once the waste is safely disposed of. The company utilizes a Zero Waste Landfill Program, which turns waste into energy. During this process, waste is reduce to 10% of its original size and for every 10 tons of waste, 5200 kWh of power is produced. The power is then fed back into the grid and used to power local homes and businesses. This process also reduces US Ecology’s reliance on overseas oil. For every ton of waste processed the company avoids the importation of one barrel of oil or the mining of one quarter ton of coal.
US Ecology employs over 500 Michigan residents while investing millions of dollars each year in our Michigan facilities. These facilities work close with local Michigan-based vendors to help sustain and grow Michigan’s economy. US Ecology offers Michigan-based industries, including auto suppliers and Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM), hazardous waste management and industrial services giving them the ability to succeed by reducing their environmental liabilities and cost.
