outside of a wastewater treatment plant

US Ecology Michigan operates a non-commercial wastewater treatment plant. The facility pretreats onsite leachate from the hazardous waste landfill prior to discharge to a local POTW. The wastewater treatment plant utilizes a membrane biological reactor (MBR) continuous discharge treatment system to replace a batch chemical treatment system. A MBR combines activated sludge treatment with a membrane liquid-solid separation process. The membrane component uses low pressure ultra-filtration membranes.

The MBR eliminates the use of granular activated carbon and sodium hypochlorite used in the chemical batch system but is still preceded by chemical precipitation for the removal of heavy metals and co-precipitation of cyanides and PCBs. The MBR treatment system generates a cleaner wastewater and significantly reduces treatment costs.
